Things were looking a bit grim for Ryu at this stage of the first game of the Kisei title match. He thought he'd try this running battle, but it seems as if he missed a tactical response when he started this variation. What he really wanted to do was to hane at 1. But before he did, he read out a white counter that made it impossible, and with the path he was forced to choose he lost his attack on the white groups on the right side of the board. Interestingly, the 9-dans watching in the side room missed this white counter during the game due to a hasty analysis, and it wasn't until they heard Ryu Shikun muttering a certain shape (can't give it away here!) that they saw it. What was white's clever counter?
